Justin Nott, Director
Justin Nott is a Melbourne based theatre director. He holds a Bachelor of Arts - Media & Communications from the University of Melbourne and a Postgraduate Diploma in Performance Creation (Directing) from the Victorian College of the Arts. With over ten years of experience in the arts and theatre, Justin founded Theatre Incubator in 2009 and in 2011 was Festival Director for Mudfest, Australia’s largest student arts and culture festival. He now works as an independent director.
Justin’s recent works have focused on exploring the post-dramatic form with a strong emphasis on experimentalism in performance, while investigating modes of immersive theatre, genre subversion and socio-political agitation. His recent directing credits include Sarah Kane’s 4.48 Psychosis, Devoted: A New Musical for Midsumma Festival, Blindness for Mudfest and Melbourne Fringe 2013. He also founded guerrilla theatre group Backyard Bandits, directing their underground performance,The Secret Spectacular in a suburban Melbourne backyard.
In 2015, Justin collaborated with director Cathy Hunt in association with La Mama and AMES to deliver drama workshops for new migrants and refugees, devising a new work for performance at the La Mama Courthouse. He was selected to work with the Melbourne Theatre Company on the Cyber Electric new play development program, working with director Sarah Giles and writer Tobias Manderson-Galvin on his work, The Unknown Man on Somerton Beach. He is currently working with the Malthouse Theatre in the Provocateurs program, engaging with local and international artists in creating conversations around theatre and performance within the Melbourne community.
Justin will begin work on a number of projects in 2016 including Miley Cyrus psycho-trash bio, The Banger in collaboration with playwright Jessica Bellamy, as well as a further development of his adaptation of José Saramago’s Blindness. Justin will also begin production on a new Melbourne-based web series for premiere in 2017.
